My Impression of Holden

In the first chapter of the "Catcher in the Rye", you learn that Holden is lazy and

decides not to live up to his potential. Nothing is crippling him to reach his potential. It is his

decision not to achieve what he can, but he still blames the establishment. Even though his

boarding school is strict, he is still given an oppurtunity to succeed. I do judge him because of

how much i relate to him. I know how it feels and how easy it is to be lazy. If you don't care, then

you don't fail. It is good to be optomistic but sometimes you need to be realistic and

relize that not everything will be ok. I will say that I dont initially like Holden and I don't feel bad

for him because he put himself in his situation. I do hope that i change my opinion on him. I'm

watching the ESPN 30 for 30 movie on Ricky Williams who was an All-Star running back

who retired from football at his prime and everyone judged him and thought he retired to just

smoke weed all his life, which is not the case. Ricky is much more and is deeper then i could ever

imagine. I hope I have the same reaction to Holden as i do to Ricky right now.

  1. psst... Charlie.
I don't think you actually HAVE to use MLA format, but whatever works for you I guess is fine...
Also, good analysis. nice adding some of the real world into the mix.

  2. i agree with you about Holden putting himself in this situation and not trying to live up to his potential but i also think his way of criticizing the establishment is very interesting, he seems to be a more impartial judge of people and situations then we are in reality. still i like your points and i hope you come to like Holden to:)

  3. I like this comment about Ricky Williams...I'd like to see you expand on how he connects to Holden.
I also like how you said you are able to pass judgment because you are able to connect. I think your line, "if you don't care, then you don't fail," is very true; however, might Holden care more than he wants us to believe? How so? Can you find any textual evidence?
